Nestled in Oregon’s Umpqua National Forest, Whitehorse Falls is one of those hidden gems that often gets overlooked in favor of its taller, more famous neighbors like Toketee Falls and Watson Falls. However, what it lacks in height, it more than makes up for in beauty. This 15-foot waterfall may be small, but its picturesque setting, crystal-clear waters, and easy accessibility make it a must-visit stop along Highway 138, also known as the Highway of Waterfalls.

Unlike many other waterfalls in the region that require moderate hikes, Whitehorse Falls is located just steps from the parking area, making it an effortless yet rewarding destination for anyone passing through.

Getting to Whitehorse Falls

Whitehorse Falls is located right off Highway 138 in south-central Oregon’s Umpqua National Forest. The small parking lot is clearly marked, making it an easy and convenient stop while exploring the area.

Despite being a lesser-known waterfall, Whitehorse Falls is a great place to stop and take a break. The parking area has a bathroom and a few picnic tables, making it an ideal spot to stretch your legs, enjoy a snack, or simply relax and take in the peaceful surroundings before continuing your journey.

A Waterfall You Can Hear From the Parking Lot

One of the unique aspects of Whitehorse Falls is that you can hear and even partially see the waterfall right from the parking area. As soon as you step out of your car, the soothing sound of rushing water welcomes you, inviting you to take the short walk to the viewing deck.

The walk to the waterfall is incredibly short—just a few steps—and is fully accessible, making it one of the easiest waterfalls to visit in Oregon.

Stepping Onto the Viewing Deck

Once you reach the wooden viewing platform, you’re greeted by a truly beautiful sight. Whitehorse Falls gently tumbles over a moss-covered  ledge, framed perfectly by the surrounding old-growth forest.

One of my favorite details about Whitehorse Falls is the way the fallen logs have naturally formed an “X” across the waterfall, almost as if nature itself is marking this spot as a hidden treasure.

Looking beyond the falls, the Clearwater River flows peacefully, adding to the calm, serene atmosphere of this little oasis.

Exploring Beyond the Viewing Deck

If you’re up for it and want to experience Whitehorse Falls up close, there are a few ways to explore further.

If you carefully step around the side of the deck, you can get down in front of the falls for an even better perspective. Despite its modest size, Whitehorse Falls creates a surprising amount of mist, which feels refreshing on a warm day. Down near the water, you’ll find amazing photography opportunities, with multiple angles where you can capture the waterfall framed beautifully by the fallen logs and mossy rocks.

For those looking to explore a bit more, head back toward the parking lot, where you’ll notice small trails leading to the top of the falls. From here, you can follow the Clearwater River upstream, where you’ll discover additional scenic spots with cascading water, moss-covered rocks, and peaceful forest scenery. If you continue toward the nearby campground, you’ll find a particularly beautiful area with a small cascade, fallen logs, and a peaceful tree-lined riverbank—a perfect place to relax and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.

Visiting this area in the fall adds another level of beauty, as the surrounding trees transform into vibrant shades of gold and red, contrasting against the deep greens of the moss and ferns.

Final Thoughts

For me, Whitehorse Falls has become one of my favorite stops along Highway 138. There’s something incredibly peaceful about standing in front of this hidden little waterfall, watching the water flow through a forest that feels untouched by time. It may not be as famous as some of Oregon’s larger waterfalls, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a place to slow down, breathe in the fresh forest air, and appreciate the simple beauty of nature.

If you’re ever driving through Oregon’s Umpqua National Forest, I highly recommend taking a few minutes to experience Whitehorse Falls for yourself.

Happy exploring!
