White Branch Falls: A Mossy Forest Waterfall Near McKenzie Bridge
QUICK GUIDE
I haven’t had a chance to create a full, detailed guide to this location yet, but I still wanted to share a little information about this beautiful spot.
White Branch Falls is a beautiful little waterfall tucked into the forest near McKenzie Bridge, not too far from Proxy Falls. The short trail follows a creek through lush forest, with several bridge crossings and little cascades along the way. The waterfall itself spills down a series of moss-covered steps, and even though it’s a smaller waterfall, it’s definitely one of the more beautiful ones I’ve seen in this area.

Road access: White Branch Falls is off the McKenzie Highway (OR 242). The route over McKenzie Pass from Sisters closes seasonally. The camp’s directions say the approach from McKenzie Bridge remains open year-round, with the seasonal closure just beyond the camp entrance. Snow, weather, or other closures can still affect your trip, so check TripCheck and ODOT’s McKenzie Highway information before heading out.
ODOT allows pedestrians beyond seasonal snow gates at their own risk, but the closed road isn’t maintained. Starting from a closure would add road walking and winter conditions to the trip, so don’t plan on the short waterfall walk described here if you can’t drive to the usual access.
My Experience
I found White Branch Falls while scrolling around on Google Maps, and I’m really glad I decided to check it out. The road toward Camp White Branch leads to the area. When I visited, I parked in a large open space down the road, just below the trailhead. I didn’t see any signs saying the parking or trail was limited to camp guests.
The main trail is fairly short and flat, winding through a lush forest along a beautiful creek. There are several bridge crossings, and trails run along both sides of the creek. You can zigzag between them, make a loop, or go out and back.
As you get closer to the falls, the terrain gets a little steeper and you start seeing small cascades along the creek below the main waterfall. It’s an incredibly peaceful area to sit and relax for a while. A little farther up, White Branch Falls cascades down a set of rock steps, with plenty of beautiful vantage points.
When the water is low, crossing to the other side may be possible. That can change with the flow, so assess the conditions carefully and don’t cross if it looks unsafe. There’s also a steep trail along the side of the falls toward the top. That’s more challenging than the main approach, and wet rock and steep footing call for extra caution.
This is a great spot for photographs and videos, and it’s just a really peaceful place to spend some time. If you’re exploring the area, my Proxy Falls Location Guide covers another waterfall nearby. I hope you get to make it out and see White Branch Falls for yourself.
Happy exploring 🌿
